Cinelab Film & Digital is pleased to be featured in the latest Focus on: Shooting on Film supplement from British Cinematographer, a special edition dedicated to the continued resurgence of photochemical filmmaking and the craft that surrounds it.
The guide brings together cinematographers, technicians and industry specialists to explore why filmmakers across projects of all scales are continuing to choose film – not out of nostalgia, but because of its unique creative discipline, aesthetic qualities and the deliberate approach it encourages on set.
As part of the supplement, Cinelab contributed to several pieces examining the evolving relationship between cinematographers and modern film laboratories.
Film Lab 2.0
One of the key features, “Film Lab 2.0”, explores how contemporary laboratories are combining traditional photochemical craft with advanced digital workflows to support modern productions.
The article highlights Cinelab’s approach to building a workflow that integrates film processing, scanning and dailies into a seamless pipeline designed around the needs of today’s filmmakers. Cinelab CEO Adrian Bull discusses the importance of pairing the heritage of the film laboratory with the efficiency and flexibility expected in modern production environments.
“What’s important is that we’ve coupled film processing with top-end scanning and dailies services to provide a workflow that makes supporting filmmaking as efficient as possible,” Bull explains in the feature.
The article also touches on Cinelab’s DFD (digital–film–digital) process, an analogue intermediate workflow that records digital material onto film before scanning it back to digital, embedding the physical qualities of film grain, texture and halation into the image.

Working with a Lab
Cinelab also appears in the supplement’s “Working with a Lab” feature, which explores how cinematographers collaborate with laboratories to refine the look of their projects.
Cinematographer Tim Sidell BSC describes his long-standing collaboration with Cinelab’s Head of Scanning and Shortform Colour, Paul Dean.
“The person I rely on is Paul Dean at Cinelab Film and Digital London, because I’ve worked with him for so long,” Sidell says.
“I’ll send him mood boards before the shoot. It may be that we’re getting our dailies every three days and he’ll send me stills about how he’s done his one light, or best light, but invariably it’s exactly where I want it to be.”
The feature highlights the close collaboration between cinematographers and laboratory teams, from early testing through to colour decisions and the delivery of rushes.
