WHAT DOES BLEACH BYPASS MEAN?

Bleach Bypass - A photo-chemical technique where the processor is re-configured so that the film negative by-passes the bleach section. This retains the silver in the negative and results in a creative look that exhibits solid blacks and whites, strong shadows, de-saturated colours and a bronze hue to skin tones. Due to the time it takes to re-configure the processor before and after a Bleach Bypass run a surcharge is added.

FILM SCANNING

WHAT FILM SCANNER IS BEST FOR MY PROJECT?

Scanners - A film scanner is a technical specialist device used to scan original film for storage as high-resolution digital files. Our expert Sales Team and Film Technicians can advise on the best workflow to follow and the choice of Cinelab Film & Digital's wide range of scanners: 2 x Arriscan HDR, 2 x Scanity HDR and 2 x Spirit 4K. Each scanner has unique capabilities which guarantees best service, best picture and best options for all budgets.

WHAT SCANS AND DELIVERABLES ARE POSSIBLE?

As 'standard' our Scans are supplied as Full Frame, 2K 10 Bit Log DPX files. 2K Log Scan - The film is scanned on a 2K scanner as LOG (completely ungraded with a LOG (flat) characteristic applied in order to extract as much detail from the negative and create a digital clone of the footage). Grading will be performed by the client at a later stage. OR: 2K Log Scan + Grade - Once the film has been scanned as a "2K Log Scan" (as above), it is then graded to create either a 2K "Best Light", or "Technical Best Light" as required. The above 2K options can also be at 4K & 6K resolutions. You can also choose from a range of Aspect Ratios, Resolutions and Deliverables. See our Project Scanning Checklist.

WHAT ARE DPX FILES?

We scan as standard to 2K 10 bit Log DPX – Digital Picture Exchange files. These are the extremely large, un-compressed master files that the scanners create. All our transcodes to other file Codec’s (QT, H264, Mxf) are made from these files for the very best quality.

WHAT IS A BIT FILE?

Bit Depth - We scan typically to 10Bit, 16Bit as an extra option. Basically this is the amount of chroma & luma information contained in each pixel. 16Bit files are significantly larger than 10Bit files.

WHAT FORMAT DO YOU NEED EDL's DELIVERED IN?

EDL – Edit Decision List - a file created by editorial containing a list of required shots. It contains Lab Roll and Time-Code values for the location of each shot. This should always be provided as a CMX36 file in “C” Mode.
