New Series Uses Cinelab’s DFD Process to Capture 1960s Spain with Cinematic Authenticity

Now streaming on Movistar Plus+, La Canción is the latest series from creators Pepe Coira and Fran Araújo, directed by Alejandro Marín and beautifully shot by cinematographer Andreu Ortoll. Set in 1968, the series follows Esteban Guerra, a young RTVE executive tasked with an unusual mission: secure Spain a win at the Eurovision Song Contest. Alongside the eccentric Artur Kaps, Guerra launches ‘Operation Eurovision’, a frantic search for the perfect song, performer, and vision to reflect a more modern Spain.

Though captured digitally, La Canción achieves a distinctly vintage look thanks to Cinelab Film & Digital’s DFD (Digital-Film-Digital) process. The footage was transferred to 16mm Kodak 250D film, then processed and scanned back to digital. The result is a richly textured, era-appropriate aesthetic that mirrors the visual language of late 1960s television and cinema.

With its playful, high-stakes plot and immersive period styling, La Canción is a testament to how modern storytelling can be elevated through classic film techniques.
